Eric, Gary, and Frank start the show right off with Gary explaining why he wrote his outstanding book Iced and thanks to his interview on a past Motivation and Muscle Podcast Show Frank was able to heal a Quadricep injury in days rather than in weeks. We talk about the history of ice and where it evolved from. Everett Knowles and Dr. Ronald Malt were the main players in the beginning of how ice evolved.  Everett had severed his arm and it was later reattached to his body. The doctors shouted to put that arm on ice and thus the ice age began.  Gary tells us how this morphed into the RICE protocol. Gary tells us RICE which stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation are only good for severed body parts or to stop you from bleeding out after a severe injury.Eric and Frank talk about his lifelong history of physical culture and how his injury occurred and why he treated it the way he did. Frank was testing his maximum squat at 70 percent for repetitions. As he approached his 31st repetition on his descent down he felt like his quadricep started to separate. Frank immediately dumped the bar and knew he didn’t tear the quadricep because he could still stand up straight.Frank tells Gary and Eric that when the injury occurred he didn’t ice it at all. Frank literally stood for four hours. It was quite painful through the night as he slept but the most amazing thing happened was the next morning he had very little pain and up to 90 to 95 percent range in his leg. Gary follows up with what Frank did was the proper protocol. Keep the injured area in motion. The body is made to self-repair, not self-destruct. We discuss how important it is to get this protocol out to the mainstream athletes so they can heal and repair quickly when an injury occurs. There are three steps to get you back on your feet and make you get highly active again. The three steps are inflammation, repair and remodel.
