Eric and Jon get right into the meat and bones of one of their favorite topics which is pressing. We both have such a passion for this movement and the benefits of added strength and muscle mass.
Eric and Jon discuss why the overhead movements have lost favor over the years whether it’s the clean and press or lifting out of a pair of squat racks and pressing and locking it out overhead.
Jon feels the log press is one of the best overhead movements out there and gives us two examples to think on. The first one is the combination of building the body from the ankles up and the flight or fright feeling you get when you have something very large and heavy overhead. The second example is the hormonal charge that your body will be producing in a massive way to be able to rise physically and mentally to the challenge that has been put forth.
Eric and Jon really hit upon the amount of variation you should do to become a great presser. Some of the best ways to accomplish this feat is by doing the Apollon Axle clean and press, the Apollon Axle press out a pair of squat stands, one or two arm kettle bell presses or the one or two arm dumbbell press. One of the best things about this style of training is the added grip strength you’ll build because of the varied hand positions you’ll need to press these different bars.
Eric and Jon talk about warm-ups and how they will put you in a mental state to be able to go after your overhead press aggressively and with success. Eric describes some of his weighted warm-ups with this idea in mind.
