Bill is a strength historian, a strength athlete who is dedicated to over 50 years of teaching the value of strength and physical culture and the owner of the world famous Superstrengthtraining.com web site. Eric and Bill lead the podcast off with the importance of weightlifting and how it can be such a positive influence on you for a lifetime! From there we get right into Olympic Lifting heavyweight Bob Bednarski. Bednarski was born on April 5, 1944 and passed away on February 22, 2004. He set 12 world records in 1968–69. He won three medals at the world championships, including a gold in 1969. Bednarski’s lightning quick agility and technique defeated much bigger and strong competitors. The Soviet athletes copied Bednarski’s successful style of Olympic Lifting and were able to duplicate his success. During the 1967 Pan American Games Bednarski suffered a career threatening elbow injury. He recovered from the injury and the next year set two world records at the national championships. Eric and Bill talk about how Bednarski was the last senior weightlifter in the USA to hold the highest totals for the two Olympic lifts.  In 1983, Bob was inducted into the United States Weightlifting Federation Hall of Fame. In 1990, he was inducted into the New England Hall of Fame.  Bednarski was married to his wife  Kathy for 29 years. They had a son Bobby and a daughter Sheryl. Bednarski came from a large family having had three brothers and three sisters. He loved animals and owned three poodles. We talk about how many great lifters initially started weight training to improve there given sport but soon come to realize that they want to participate competitively. We also address the lack of manual labor in today’s world and how it directly effects how physical you are. Bill and I really get into the doer’s of the world. Bill Hinbern-Ken Patera-#477

Bill Hinbern-Ken Patera-#477-Eric Fiorillo Host of The Award Winning Motivation and Muscle Podcast Show Welcomes Bill Hinbern to the broadcast. Bill is a strength historian, a strength athlete who is dedicated to over 50 years of teaching the value of strength and physical culture and the owner of the world famous Superstrengthtraining.com web site. Eric and Bill kick the show into high gear with the genetically gifted Ken Patera. Ken was involved in track and field, Olympic Weight Lifting and Strongman. Ken was fully dedicated to track and field but an ankle injury cut his career short. From there he put all of his effort into the shot put and the discus throw. As Bill tells Eric he excelled in the shot put but after a poor finish in a meet he concentrated solely on Olympic Weight Lifting. Ken was a giant in Olympic Weightlifting winning several medals at the 1971 Pan American Games. In America Ken was a Champion four different times from 1969 thru 1972. He was the first American to clean and jerk over 500 lbs (227 kg), which he did at the 1972 Senior Nationals in Detroit. He is also the only American to clean and press 500 lbs (227 kg). Ken was the last American super heavyweight for years to excel at weightlifting at an international level. Eric and Bill talk about the rumors that Patera had pressed off the racks a 550-pound overhead push press. Patera always had one obstacle he could never shake by the name of Alexeev who always came out on top. Once the clean and press was eliminated from competition Patera retired from Olympic Weightlifting.  Patera also competed in the first Worlds Strongest Man in 1977. He finished third behind Bruce Wilhelm and Bob Young. Eric and Bill discuss Patera’s arrival into professional wrestling. He wrestled mainly for the World Wrestling Federation, National Wrestling Alliance and the American Wrestling Association during the 1970s and 1980s. Patera was one super athlete who was such a gifted man. Truly an inspiring story! The Motivation and Muscle Podcast Connects Your Brain To Your Brawn. Enjoy

Bill Hinbern-Pullovers-#445

Bill Hinbern-Pullovers-#445-Eric Fiorillo Host of The Award Winning Motivation and Muscle Podcast Show Welcomes Bill Hinbern to the broadcast. Bill Hinbern is a strength historian, a strength athlete who is dedicated to over 50 years of teaching the value of strength and physical culture and the owner of the world famous Superstrengthtraining.com web site. Eric and Bill talk about another forgotten muscle producing lift called the pullover. Eric and Bill talk about how the original pullover was performed from the ground, meaning lying on your back and performing it with either straight or bent arms.  Remember benches were not produced till the early 1960″s. The attitude back then and now was the pullover was no good and a dangerous exercise. Eric and Bill discuss the role of the pullover done immediately after a very heavy set of squats. The two things the pullover will do for you are it will straighten the spine after a very heavy load has been placed on it and of course through the heavy breathing it will develop the rib cage and chest. We talk about the Mark Berry high rep squat courses teamed up with the high rep pullovers and gallons of whole milk. We have a few words for you. Gains, Gains and Gains. Bill gives Eric a vivid description on how to begin a pullover program. A few of the best ways to do  pullovers are with an empty exercise bar, curling bar or even an exercise plate. This way the musculature is warmed up properly and there is a much less chance of injury. If your looking to make some very big muscle gains with the pullover this show is full of history and instruction on a movement that has the potential to build a huge upper body. Stick with a winning program that will build lots of thickness and strength. It’s always a good idea to revisit our lifting past! Bill Hinbern-George Hackenschmidt-#435

Eric Fiorillo Host of The Award Winning Motivation and Muscle Podcast Show Welcomes Bill Hinbern to the broadcast. Bill Hinbern is a strength historian, a strength athlete who is dedicated to over 50 years of teaching the value of strength and physical culture and the owner of the world famous Superstrengthtraining.com web site.

Eric and Bill start the podcast right off with a vivid description of the physique of the great George Hackenschmidt. Born Georg Karl Julius Hackenschmidt, he was an early 20th-century strongman and professional wrestler. As Bill relates to Eric that he is recognized as professional wrestling’s first world heavyweight champion.

Bill tells Eric that George Hackenschmid,t with his wrestling skills, was destined to become famous throughout the World and take his place in fighting arts history better known as THE RUSSIAN LION. He was a fighter  and unlike many of his opponents and contemporary wrestlers was never mean, vindictive or unnecessarily rough in his wrestling bouts. Hackenschmidt is believed to be the creator of the professional wrestling version of the bear hug.

Eric and Bill talk about what a great weightlifter Hack was. He could floor press which was the precursor to the bench press with a weight of 361 pounds. As Bill describes the official 400 pound bench press was not official till the 1950’s.

We talk about the 335 pound press Hack did while in a wrestlers bridge, his monster one arm press overhead and him lifting and pressing a small horse overhead.

This was one of the greatest athletes ever.

We talk about the wrestling matches with Frank Gotch which, by the way, was the only opponent Hack ever lost to. This podcast is loaded with the life of a man who really put his mark on Physical Culture and could only be told by Bill Hinbern.

Bill Hinbern-Tommy Kono-#417

Eric Fiorillo Host of The Award Winning Motivation and Muscle Podcast Show Welcomes Bill Hinbern to the broadcast. Bill Hinbern is a strength historian, a strength athlete who is dedicated to over 50 years of teaching the value of strength and physical culture and the owner of the world famous Superstrengthtraining.com web site.

Eric and Bill start the podcast right off talking about Tamio “Tommy” Kono who had recently passed away.

Bill tells us about what a great Olympic weight lifting champion Tommy was and how Kono set records in four different weight classes.

Bill goes on to tell Eric how Kono was a bodybuilding champion also.

Kono was born in Sacramento California in June of 1930. Kono’s family was relocated to Tule Lake Internment Camp in 1942 during WW II. Tommy was a sickly kid who at this time of relocation was introduced to weightlifting. After 3 1/2 years in the internment camp Tommy’s family were allowed to leave and he finished his high school education in Sacramento California.

As Bill tells Eric Tommy was drafted for the Korean war but was kept home  after officials learned of his Olympic potential.

Kono was a gold medalist at both the 1952 and the 1956 Summer Olympics. Kono was also a silver medalist in the 1960 Summer Olympics. Kono won the World Weightlifting Championships six consecutive times from 1953 to 1959 and was a three-time Pan American Games Champion in 1955, 1959 and 1963.

Tommy trained by himself three to four times a week and could gain or lose weight very easily. He had flawless technique on the three Olympic lifts and later went on to be part of the famous York Barbell Club.

Tommy Kono was an American Hero who aspired to the word Champion. He will be sorely missed.

Bill Hinbern-Bill Kazmaier- #409

Eric Fiorillo Host of The Award Winning Motivation and Muscle Podcast Show Welcomes Bill Hinbern to the broadcast.

Bill Hinbern is a strength historian, a strength athlete who is dedicated to over 50 years of teaching the value of strength and physical culture and the owner of the world famous Superstrengthtraining.com web site.

Eric and Bill kick the show right off  by talking about Americas greatest strongman, Bill Kazmaier.

Kazmaier, known as Kaz in the strength circles, was a powelifter, strongman and a professional wrestler. His big claim to fame was the World’s Strongest Man title which he held from 1980 thru 1982. He proclaimed himself the strongest man to ever live. He was at that time the most dominate force in strongman easily handling the competition.

Eric and Bill talk about Kaz’s powerlifting career.

Kazmaier officially became the first human to bench press 300 kg (661.4 lbs). The bench press was done raw with no gear whatsoever.

Due to many injuries in his powerlifting career Kaz could no longer compete at such a high level and went on to Strongman.

Kaz was such a talented versatile athlete that he tried out for the NFL’S Green Bay Packers and had a stint in World Championship Wrestling.

Kaz is truly an inspiration to us all. He was a man that put it all on the line in his chosen sport at the time. Injured or not he would always find a way to compete at the highest level and win!
