Melody tells us how David “Iron Tamer” Whitley and Bud Jeffries were her major influences that motivated her in learning the trade of bending steel. I asked Melody point blank why did she take to bending so much. She responded by saying she felt is was something hard to do and would have to work very hard to master it. She said she would not be defeated by bending. How’s that for honesty and perseverance? Melody talks about the cheapest way to build a great grip by filling a bucket with rice and sinking your hand into it opening and closing it repeatedly. Melody also suggests hanging from monkey bars, pinch gripping plates and framers walks for building a bone crushing grip. Eric and Melody discuss that being a specialist in any sport is great but the meaning of a real athlete is someone who will step out of that comfort zone and take the ultimate chance on glory. Eric and Travis talk about what it takes to be a good strength coach. We talk about what is needed when you start a new program. We make reference to bridging, posture and how many young men have such a poor grip. One common denominator he finds with some of his clients is there are no more dragons to slay. I use this metaphor to point to there was a time when men would go on some type of expedition or conquest to prove their worthiness to themselves or others of importance. We don’t do a lot of manual labor anymore or use our hands to move and pickup things. This creates not only hand weakness but it also effects the body whole. We talk about the importance of a strength coach to draw up the athletes program, to keep evaluating the athletes progress and to choose the movements that will enhance the athletes power, strength attitude and endurance.  Travis and I believe some of the best strength coaches originate from the garages, basements or come from the outdoor environment. This strength coach is already battle tested and has been put in situations because of their environment and  fought their way out and succeeded. This is why they can teach and succeed this way because of hands on experience. This always translates best to producing the most successful athlete in their chosen sport. We talk about how powerlifting has brought so many benefits to her physique and made her a much better bodybuilder. Eric asks Susan 5 questions that he constantly asks himself all the time. The first question I always ask is the why. Why did you start lifting? Susan’s answer was  she was very small and wanted to get strong both physically and mentally. We talk about her early days of figure competition and the move into bodybuilding  and beyond. We touch upon the need to be mentally strong and how this all comes from our dedication to lifting. The trials we must endure to become great and reach our goals is all born from maybe that last five pounds on the bar we lifted and succeed with. Susan uses that mental power to succeed outside of the gym. Susan talks about her diet for both sports and how she can keep them both pretty much the same without losing any strength at all. Bill Hinbern-Power Lifting Great Mel Hennesey-#247-Eric and Bill talk about another unsung hero in the world of weightlifting. The great Mel Hennesey. We feel men like Anthony Ditillo, John Davis and Mel Hennesey  all fill this description. Mel Hennesey was one exceptional bench presser and very strong in the squat and deadlift also. Mel always favored the big heavy bench press. He stood five feet five inches and weighed anywhere from 220lbs to 240lbs. Bill goes down the line and names some of the 500lb bench pressers such as Doug Hepburn, Reg Park etc. Mel trained very hard on his outside appearance meaning he didn’t just train the three power lifts. He incorporated into his training and favored the Good Morning, the triceps close grip bench press and very heavy lat pulldowns. He believed these  assistance exercises delivered big time in both growth , added strength and the ability of keeping the body from going stale. Bill really emphasizes how these earlier strength athletes who set records in the bench press for example trained on rickety equipment, used very strict form and sometimes even broke records in street clothes. They were exceptional individuals who we revere so much more today because of their ability to train in any situation and still prosper. Everyone admires and respects strength. After getting off steroids Mindy decided to just go out and train for a while and have some fun. That fun ended up having Mindy entering a Strongman meet and placing second. She excelled in the stone lifting and the heavier events.  She feels powerlifting transferred greatly to the strongman events. We talk about making up your mind and doing everything possible to succeed. You need to take your goals very personal. Once you have decided this is it no matter what make or break the road to your personal glory has begun. This could take years to achieve these monster goals with lots of joy, heartbreak, injuries and success. This is what creates the winning attitudes we all strive to attain. Sometimes we are tested way beyond our belief but you’ll never know the real you until life smashes you right between the eyes and says I dare you. Both diets can and will be beneficial when utilized correctly. Melody has all the American Powerlifting  Records for her age and weight class. We talk about the the psychology of nutrition which Melody is working and getting her Masters Degree in. There is so much to you’re thoughts and food. When you can conquer these beliefs your life changes for the better and all things around you improve. I talk about steel bending with Melody and how she got started. She been bending steel for five years. We talk about what she uses to train her grip. Pullups, Crushing apples and potatoes is how she practices working her grip presently.
