Eric and Roger kick the podcast right off with two of the biggest result producing exercises ever. The two were going to bring to you today is heavy dumbbell work and the art of bent rowing. We begin with the Cyr db one hand lift overhead. The whole idea of this was to get a monster db onto your shoulder and lock it out  overhead anyway you could. We talk about how much muscle is involved  from head to toe when lifting and pressing one of these dumbbells. We believe the midsection is taxed much more then a barbell and the level of athleticism has to be brought up to a much higher level because of the physical and mental demands placed on the body. We also address the lack of trainees not only pressing but so many not even knowing what a bent row is. The row comes in variations such as using an olympic bar, dumbbells and kettlebells. We also talk about the thickness of the bar  we use when we dumbbell row. We talk about if you want to be a great stone lifter work some dumbbell rows into your program. We talk about how to create a routine with the emphasis on pressing over head and pulling bent rows. We add some high bar Olympic squats, neck work and grip work into the mix and you have a program that delivers muscle mass, strength and vitality. These are two lifts which anyone can do. Dive into these two lifts and build coconut sized shoulder and lats so big you’ll feel you can fly! Do you want to lift big? Sink your teeth into some  dumbbells and rows and let the gains begin! Eric and Roger dive right into this label of Hardgainer. We both understand the concept of the word’s definition but we are in strong disagreement of it.

I grew up on the great Stuart McRobert’s magazine Hardgainer and I understand what he and his great stable of authors were conveying but I never liked that word. I would like words more like hard worker, barrier blaster or dominator or obliterator. These have much more carry over to me mentally.

The thing we must stop doing right off the bat is comparing ourselves to others in our given sport. It’s nice to respect and look up to our heroes for inspiration and motivation but we must remember we aren’t them.

Strength and Power comes in all sizes and we should respect that.

The thing we should all concentrate on is how much better you can get and how will you implement this into your life.

Forget the labels and the people out there who will give you 10 reasons why you can’t succeed. Eric and Roger can give you 100 reasons why you can succeed and why you should do it. Labels and critiques can’t slow you down when you have built the mind stamina to win no matter what the cost. Create your own label of yourself, succeed and spread it everywhere within an ear shot to be heard . It’s not the label that matters. Its the man or woman’s final stamp on themselves which defines who and what you become.

Who doesn’t like doing heavy partials to build a herculean body?

The feel of pushing or pulling a weight so large that it takes every fiber of your being to move it. The level of concentration you build is so great that you literally could melt whatever stands in your path. Well if these words move you Eric and Roger construct for you why partials can make such a pronounced effect on your physique and mental tenacity.

We talk about why we started using partials and how they are the best confidence builder out there when faced with a huge pile of steel/metal to move.

Eric and Roger talk about the three levels to lift from.

In this segment  of the podcast we concentrate on the squat.

We also throw in some isometrics for good measure, thick bars and whatever we’ve worked on in the past or our present day training.

Who out there in Motivation and Muscle Land doesn’t like to press overhead? There are so many ways to do this. Eric and Roger talk about this man making exercise and like the dip, bent row, Hise shrug and the pullover they have been cast aside for other exercises which don’t require as much hard work. We talk about the positive effects the overhead press has on your muscular structure from head to toe.  When you add the clean in with the press you’ll build slabs of usable muscle able to clean and press whatever you set your sights upon. We also talk about the visual look of a heavy overhead presser. Take a look at their spinal erectors. Their spinal erectors are thick and deep and have the look of power. For anyone who is a fan of the great John Grimek Roger has uncovered a picture of Grimek doing an extreme “Lay back” style press from the early 1930s.  Grimek is pressing a huge globe barbell showing that to become great at pressing or in life you’ll do the things others won’t do to become great! If you love being a man and  enjoy the great old time stories all about those adventures then this show will really make your blood course through your veins. Eric and Roger each read one of their favorite manly stories from yesteryear. Both stories are filled with danger, adventure, guns, bloody fighting, jumping off a cliff, grizzly bears and living through a time I can identify and appreciate and wish I could be a part of. Rogers story reads like this: Here’s the headline from the Chicago Tribune Circa 1888 to get your heart pumping. It goes like this: “A Mighty man of Muscle”, “Sam Coollidge’s Fistic Exploits in the Early Days of Denver”, “His blows Cracked Skulls and Broke Jaws — Knocking Out the Sheriff and Holding the Entire Town at Bay — A Terrific Bare-Knuckle Fight with a Grizzly Bear That Ended in Sam’s Death.” When Roger read this newspaper article I could envision myself there. This might be a bygone era so far from today’s world but who wouldn’t want to be part of knowing a man like Sam who only makes an appearance once in a life time. The story I read comes from a super manly book recommended to me by Strongman Frank DiMeo. The book is named Cowboys, Mountain Men & Grizzly Bears. The authors name is Matthew P. Mayo. I read a story called Grisly Expedition. I’ll wet your appetite just a bit for this rousing story. On May 14, 1805 Lewis and Clark’s ambitious expedition was almost cut short when they saw this massive grizzly sleeping about 300 yards from the river and decided to fire upon it. What these men met up was an unstoppable very angry grizzly who they thought they had killed but quickly recovered and pursued them in full gallop. Wait till you hear the amazing ending. These adventures are so much fun to read about and listen to. Dreams and Manly pursuits are what we are. May they always live on!
