Not Taught in School is our topic for today’s show. Eric and Adam really give our listeners a big wallop. As Adam explains to Eric nobody cares about the  fashion statements you make or how cool you think you are in the real world. You will be judged on how you carry yourself. Some examples Eric and Adam give are do you look somebody in the eye when you first meet them, do you have a firm handshake, do you speak clearly, do you walk proud with your head up and do you have a robust strong voice? We talk about time management and your responsibility to be on time. This is a hard sell to many people because there is always an excuse or they’ve been wronged at some point in their life. If you keep rolling with that thought process don’t be upset when the good jobs evaporate right before your eyes. Eric and Adam talk about taking the bull by the horns. Eric tells Adam his dad would pound that into his head as a child. Well it worked because I have a relentless drive to succeed big. Adam explains that there is no such thing as fairness. It’s all man made. There is though a right and a wrong and until you dig your heels in and establish that within your life, life will be more of a headache then a real possibility. He was the top trainer at the biggest gym in his town when they were bought out by new owners. The new owners wanted to negotiate a new contract with Mike which led to Mike leaving and opening his own gym. Mike started his gym with eight clients. Eric and Mike talk about how he wanted to teach his students the right way to train so the incidence of injury would be far less. Mike also wanted everyone he trained to take some of his personality with them. Mike explains to Eric that he wanted his clients to see when you have passion for something you love you’ll pass that happiness on to everyone you come in contact with. Eric and Mike talk about supporting one another in the gym. Pairing trainees together  will really build the self confidence of the less experienced athlete while the more seasoned athlete takes on the leadership role. We talk about the gym business and insuring that your business is always on the up and up, taxes paid and a good clean facility. We also address a very big thing in business as in life. This is none other then being careful who you align yourself with and at the same time not letting people take advantage of you. Eric and Ken start the show right off with Ken’s approach to his latest strongman event. For starters this required Ken to travel from Colorado to Indiana. So we touched right away on his mental and physical well being. As Ken explains to Eric The Giant Live contest was so much different from other events he’s competed it. One of the things that was much different was Ken normally competes in six or seven events where Giants had only three. The events were the Log Press, Deadlift and Farmers Walk. There was so much on the line here. Next year winning or placing in the top three of Giants Live will get Ken invited to the Worlds Strongest Man.  I asked Ken what needed to be improved for next years Giants Live? He said without hesitation:”everything.” We talk briefly about some of the older Worlds Strongest Man Contests shows and how we liked the simpler format and how an athlete can go from one mental extreme to another. Ken tells Eric that he’s been in Strongman for ten years now and he realizes he has to work extra hard, get bigger, faster and stronger. Ken feel this carries over to the mental side of building much more toughness that you have to have or you just can’t win otherwise. We address improvement in competition and in getting stronger. The reason is so simple its constantly overlooked. The best way to always improve is by the word repetition. The more you do something and succeed  the better you’ll get. We really explore the role of a great trainer as opposed to one that does nothing but take the student and destroy them mentally and physically. Eric and Pawel explain how important that student should be to both of us. This could be their last chance of hope to succeed in their given sport. Pawel states clearly that he’ll start a new student who’s been through a bad training experience with Squats and Deadlifts. Pawel explains to Eric this takes their aggression and turns it into progression. We talk about food choices, obesity and what will  the mortality rate be down the road. Will we take a step backward or two steps forward? We really get into the athletes head. Eric and Pawel talk about the abilities of athletes on the way up the mountain. It’s our jobs as trainer and mentors to let them know they are all special and have the ability to see it through. Eric and Pawel agree that we need to build warriors and there are more coming.
