Eric and Stephen talk about his early beginnings in track and field, bodybuilding and the desire to be a champion. Stephen talks about observing and being around bodybuilders like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Frank Zane, Franco Columbu. Stephen met and is a big fan of Vince Gironda and trained at his gym. He said Vince didn’t take any Sh*t from anyone and he would throw you out of his gym if he didn’t like what you were doing. Stephen admired Vince because he was a big believer in the value of raw milk and raw eggs for good health. Stephen took everything he learned from these men and built it to what he believed would be most beneficial to him. We talk about lifestyle choices and the ability to keep training well into your senior years. We also talk in present day terms where what you think about most you become. You might not be good in a certain lift but that doesn’t mean you won’t find a lift that you can excel in. Lifting is a sport with many highs and lows woven through it. Bill Hinbern is a strength historian, a strength athlete who is dedicated to over 50 years of teaching the value of strength and physical culture and the owner of the world famous Superstrengthtraining.com web site.
Eric and Bill kick the show right off by talking about Americas greatest strongman, Bill Kazmaier.
Kazmaier, known as Kaz in the strength circles, was a powelifter, strongman and a professional wrestler. His big claim to fame was the World’s Strongest Man title which he held from 1980 thru 1982. He proclaimed himself the strongest man to ever live. He was at that time the most dominate force in strongman easily handling the competition.
Eric and Bill talk about Kaz’s powerlifting career.
Kazmaier officially became the first human to bench press 300 kg (661.4 lbs). The bench press was done raw with no gear whatsoever.
Due to many injuries in his powerlifting career Kaz could no longer compete at such a high level and went on to Strongman.
Kaz was such a talented versatile athlete that he tried out for the NFL’S Green Bay Packers and had a stint in World Championship Wrestling.
Kaz is truly an inspiration to us all. He was a man that put it all on the line in his chosen sport at the time. Injured or not he would always find a way to compete at the highest level and win!
