Eric explains to Mike how talent will take you very far until an injury transpires and you’ve never been mentally tested. How do you handle this? Do you cry in defeat or work harder then ever to regain your old form or strive to top it?

Expectations at any level are extremely high and Eric tells Mike what he’s after in 2016 and how he has set himself up to hit the big red bulls eye. Expectations aligned with good solid mental thought will drive you through injury, keep you connected to your sport which is so important and get you up and going with the strength of a lion and and the mental tenacity of a pitbull.

Eric and Mike start the show right off with Building that Hulk like neck you’ve always dreamed of. Eric and Mike talk about what inspired him to become a neck specialist. Wrestling is what started it all. Mike was wrestling competitively and was being taken down many times because of a weak neck. His coach pulled him aside and told Mike he needed to start building a strong neck. Mike’s coach told him where the neck goes the body follows. So at the age of 13 years old Mike embarked on neck training. Mike started with the neck curl off a bench. This is executed by hanging your head off a flat bench with a plate held against the center of your forehead. You proceed by lowering your head down curling your neck back up and returning to the lowering position. Mike would work his neck everyday with the desired number of reps because he never wanted a take down due to a weak neck. Mike then started using a neck harness. He would do 3 sets of 100 repetitions five days per week taking Saturday and Sunday off for years. Mike tells Eric he’s always being asked how big will my neck get if I train it hard? Mike explains to our family that to gain neck size you must eat good solid whole foods and stick to the high rep high volume neck workout plan. Eric and Mike talk about neck machines and the value they have when used correctly. Eric owns an original Nautilus 4 way neck machine and Mike owns a Hammer Strength neck machine. Scott was a fan of Dorian Yates which as he relates to Eric he was a skinny kid who just wanted to put some size on. Does that ever sound familiar.

Scott walks us through his lifting history. Scott like most of us started out with the bodybuilding free weight style training and having an interest in personal training has lead him into opening his own gym.

His hunger for heavy lifting really grew when he discovered how much he liked to deadlift. Through his contacts with various power lifters he decided to now take up the sport of powerlifting.

Eric and Scott talk about the importance of the big one rep max. Scott believes the one rep max is what draws people to take up the various strength sports. It’s the idea of having something heavy pushing down on you or having to grind out a big pull to completion. Scott talks about how everybody in his gym trains raw and does a maximum lift every week.

We talk about the variations of exercises and how you can make them work towards your goals.

We discuss the methods of Louie Simmons and John McKean and the major influence its had upon our lifting.

Eric and Bill talk about another forgotten muscle producing lift called the pullover. Eric and Bill talk about how the original pullover was performed from the ground, meaning lying on your back and performing it with either straight or bent arms.  Remember benches were not produced till the early 1960″s. The attitude back then and now was the pullover was no good and a dangerous exercise. Eric and Bill discuss the role of the pullover done immediately after a very heavy set of squats. The two things the pullover will do for you are it will straighten the spine after a very heavy load has been placed on it and of course through the heavy breathing it will develop the rib cage and chest. We talk about the Mark Berry high rep squat courses teamed up with the high rep pullovers and gallons of whole milk. We have a few words for you. Gains, Gains and Gains. Bill gives Eric a vivid description on how to begin a pullover program. A few of the best ways to do  pullovers are with an empty exercise bar, curling bar or even an exercise plate. This way the musculature is warmed up properly and there is a much less chance of injury. If your looking to make some very big muscle gains with the pullover this show is full of history and instruction on a movement that has the potential to build a huge upper body. Stick with a winning program that will build lots of thickness and strength. It’s always a good idea to revisit our lifting past! First and Foremost Dr. Wong talks about ice therapy for the first 72 hours when getting an injury. Secondly we must give the injury time to rest. Thirdly we must get back into training with the idea of rehabbing  the injury slowly.  When these three areas are done correctly we will eventually be lifting as much weight or more when completed. Dr. Wong tells us what supplements will enhance the healing of the injury and the process of using isometrics to build bullet proof ligaments and tendons using all 3 positions in the power rack. A very honest and informative approach to building, strengthening and fixing any injury which doesn’t require surgery. Dr. Wong has been there and done it. We talk about the growth of the WSDM and how it takes a certain kind of athlete to travel out of their own country and compete at a very high level.  This is truly the mark of a champion win or lose.

Eric and Jeff talk about some of the events he’s working on such as the truck pull, atlas stone lift and the standing deadlift.

We talk about the mental mind set you must develop for strongman and the ability to go out there win or lose keep continually working towards your goal.

Eric and Jeff talk about the gym even early on in your life where it was a place to go when you just felt like you didn’t fit in. The gym taught you how to create standards in your life. How showing up on time was so important, respect for the iron, learning how to observe the other lifters, but most of all creating life long friendships with you lifting brothers.

There is so much inspiration, hard work and listening to men who have a disability but you would never know it by there hard charging attitude.

I was looking at some FaceBook Post’s yesterday when I stumbled on one that Mike Gillette posted about Valentine’s Day Cards. Everyone knows that Mike is on Motivation and Muscle every month so I follow his posts on Face Book.

As I read his post I became very angry how men are being portrayed even in Valentine Day’s cards. Instead of being strong and celebrating their love for their woman they are weak and apologetic.

This is the theme of today’s podcast.

The question Eric presents to Mike right away is how did we get to this point? It’s as plain as the nose on your face. Most men today don’t want to be portrayed as rugged because that can be characterized as being mean or unrefined.

That is nothing more then a load of crap.

There is a difference between men and woman and I believe this is a great thing. Men need to grow up and exceed their expectations and return back to someone who can be counted on and not worry about public perception.

As Eric and Mike discussed a man who is self assured, has manners and has a strong jaw is someone who people still admire and want to meet. A self confident male can do just that. We call it leadership.

We talk about how goals and high standards play a huge part in a man’s self worth and identity.  It’s very important to define who you are and be a shining example to everyone around you. As I always say there is always someone watching you!

For all the men out there, Eric and Mike salute you in the never ending battle to show your greatness, build a sense of pride but most of all never cower to weak trends. Walk with your head held high and always take pride in your manhood.
